Leaving the Water Cooler? These Fora? Bridge? Life?

Are you a dolphin?

There was a case where someone was suicidal and said so on the internet, and was saved. If the OP feels like this, perhaps someone who knows him could see if he is in trouble.

I suppose a free tuna salad would not lure you back. So so long and good luck, and welcome back if you should change your mind. I think ciao is pleasantly ambiguous in this regard.

I am always sorry to see someone go. Well, maybe an exception here or there, but not often. Otoh, the guy across the street left his wife after forty years of marriage. A tragedy of a whole different dimension, so I will keep your (presumed) forum departure in perspective.

At any rate, I wish you the best of luck with your fish, your girlfriend, and your life.

I really don't know how you could go before you find out the complete truth about the great global warming conspiracy. After all, everyone knows it was climatologists who brought down Lehman Brothers.

Thanks for the guidance, wetguy. I am so ignorant of the great literature!

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (1984, ISBN 0-345-39183-7) is the fourth book of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "trilogy" written by Douglas Adams. Its title is the message left by the dolphins when they departed Planet Earth just before it was demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass, as described in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Or, maybe there was someone else, somewhere who was unaware of one or both references.

It takes me back to my childhood. When I was in high school my teacher suggested that I do a term paper on Freud. "Who's Freud" I asked. It runs in the family. When my daughter was in college she had a professor who kept speaking of organic capitalism. So she asked the meaning. His shock at her lack of knowledge was matched only by his inability to explain it. Sort of like organic chemistry maybe, which I also don't understand.

Those of us who grew up in Lake Woebegone get together to swap such stories.

Anyway, I suppose he is gone, fish and all. Too bad, one of the more interesting dolphins in the tank.

Of course we got the reference right away.

The answer is 42 though I am not sure I understand the question fully.

fully understanding the question is often more important than the answer.

As a nonstat guy who tries to understand stats and respects and admires stat guys I find thinking and understanding the question is often more helpful than getting an answer.

It's funny how Adams, along with most other science fiction authors, got this one thing wrong -- they assumed that more and more powerful computers would get bigger and bigger.

Well the internet is pretty big.

And the smaller you go the more space there is.

There is alot of discussion of computers that not only take this universe but all of the other universes to compute.

that sounds big.

When H.A.R.L.I.E. Was One was about the "birth" and education of a self-aware computer. Unfortunately for Harlie, his builders wanted a computer that could answer any question — and Harlie wasn't that computer. But Harlie, being pretty smart, saved himself from being dismantled by designing the computer that could answer any question, and ensuring himself a perpetual job by ensuring that only he could talk to it. He called this new computer "Graphic Omniscient Device". B-)

Sort of a know-it-all who doesn't actually do anything? I may have met him once or twice.

Note: I can actually answer any question, if that's the only criterion. In college, I did this all the time on multiple choice exams.
