And it's better when it doesn't come up, but the auction instead goes 1-1

Look at the French, for example.  Nobody outside France thinks that Standard French is any good, but their top players don't seem to have any difficulty with getting good results playing it.

many thanks for very interesting on US trials sytems for World championships,
but by Gnasher (hi) (and hi all)

** Nobody outside France thinks that Standard French is any good, ** => am on the same railway thinking.

** but their top players don't seem to have any difficulty ** => really any ?
** with getting good results playing it. ** => am very affraid for Ostend : like in South Afrika with soccer ))

friendly all (French sys is the most difficult to play, in the universe ))

Have you visited the whole universe?

Have you even played all the systems on this planet to be able to judge?

What is wrong with Flannery? (I have not used it)

Nothing, except it takes away one useful opening from your system. And the only advantages that it offers are easily and more ellegantly compensated by playing the 1-1 Kaplan's inversion.

Hmm...clearly, you haven't played the system that that uses a modulo function of random Vogon poetry to define what the next bid should be ...

I've always thoguht Vogon poetry is based on vuvuzelæ.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Flannery or not.., French or Acol or Stand Am, or Precison...

Here is a dirty little secret: the decision what system/conventions (except in competitive bidding of course) you will going to play matters very little, perhaps a tad more than does your partner have a bad breath, as long as you are on the same page and manage to avoid misunderstandings. If I have a time I can easily find quotes from many great players and theorist saying pretty much the same thing.

Still, so why are we spending so much time tinkering with system instead of say studying "More Killing Defence" by Kelsey or doing some other things that would help our game way more? Because it is easier and way more fun, thats why!

French standard almost got standard in Spannish central zone. The top teachers taught it for the last 20 years (now moving to 2/1), some because they thought it was good, the others because they were polish and teaching polish club in Spain was a nonsense.

And I beleive French std is a very sound system and easy to play, talking about bridge, it is just like my mother tongue :), so probably biased a little.

Hey Fluffy, do you know of any good French Standard writeup on the net ? It's one of the popular systems I know nothing about.

they have 2 strong openings but some play it with 3 strong openings, that's enough of a description for me :)
