Up until now I've always loled at England winning the world cup (I was not alive in 1966). But now I will stop lol ing so I think they will go all the way. I will be rooting for New Zealand and North Korea mostly. Then after these two have been kicked out I will root for most European teams but in particular Germany and Serbia.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

For purely practical reasons, I don't want England to win.

But then again, I can't imagine the mayhem around me when they lose...

...although I was on the bus a few months ago and overheard an Englishman telling his friend that he thinks this current batch of footballers are ***** and he's on the lookout for an Algerian flag so he can hang it outside his house when England lose to Algeria.

I think this is Spain's Cup. Either that or they should consider demolishing all those stadiums and soccer fanatism.

How can someone root for the US?

Racist? What race is the US? Those guys can't handle soccer yet. They even had to come up with a different name for it than anyone else.

Yeah, well "football" was already taken.

Nationalist, I think, rather than racist. :)

you're so parochial wayne. Not only that Australia was grouped alongside NZ, among "others". How insulting - particulary after we were robbed of the cup last time.

So what? If you watch a football game between Venezuela and Brazil, do you root for Brazil because Venezuela are not as good as Brazil? I don't get it.

The 'soccer' issue also I don't get. Almost every country has a different name for football. American English is not really the same language as British English. Even though the British word seems more descriptive than the American word and most non-native speakers choose to use the British word, why can't Americans use their own?

I used racist in a figurative sense, I assumed it would be easy to understand as US really do have a lot of races. I apologize, I see it wasn't.

I think Spain will win. But I've never predicted the winner of any football tournament.

I can't help myself on the soccer/football thing, so here it goes.
Originaly the name football was for sports that were played with a ball on foot, as opposed to sports on horseback.
Both rugby and soccer were football.
In England the football association had rules for what now is known as soccer.
Association was shortened to "soc" and extended with "er" in popular youth-language.
So when you played by the rules of the FA it was called soccer.
