cats pwn dogs at the moment ...

Today, while out walking my dog, an attractive woman stopped her car in the middle of the road, got out, crossed the street, came over, greeted me and the dog politely, asked if she could pet my dog, gushed, squealed and hugged him non stop for 5 minutes, said thanks, got back in her car, waved goodbye and drove off.

I'm not saying cats aren't cool pets. But that never happened with my cat.

I didn't have a chance to ask her if she plays bridge. Probably not, if the poll is accurate. Who cares?

To paraphrase the late great Mr Adams, dog people think dogs are smarter than cats because they will do complex tricks like shaking a paw, rolling over, or fetching, in return for morsels of food, while cats refuse to.

Cat people think cats are smarter than dogs for exactly the same reason.

Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.

your cat would never put up with that :)

Ha!

Not by a long shot. In their role as mousers and ratters (as well as buggers) cats have saved millions of human lives, dogs maybe tens of thousands, if that many.

My son trained his cat to fetch, roll over, etc on command. I don't know why..I think it started when the cat was insisting on being places he was not supposed to be and it turned into a battle of wills..

Pushkin

by Marjorie Kowalski Cole

The old cat sleeps
in the newly arrived sun. One more spring
has come his way
dropping a solar bath
on failing kidneys, old cat bones.
I check for the rise and fall of breath.

Once he stalked hares
across the yard, tracked down
chicken hearts with split-lentil eyes.
Fearless, disinterested, a poseur, a demideity.
He and the dog are strangers still
after years of eating side by side.

I remember times of wailing
into my couch, alone
and utterly baffled by life,
when suddenly a cat
would be sitting on my head.

Last week I pulled him snarling
from under a chair in Dr. Bacon's office,
held him while she examined his dull coat,
felt his ribs. Pressed where it hurt.
Eight pounds of fur and bone and mad as hell
but "He's certainly less anxious in your lap,"
she murmured, astonishing me.
I had no idea. Old cat, old friend,
have I reached some place inside,
added to your life
as you have to mine?

I love that "utterly baffled by life ... cat sitting on my head" line.

I had discussed Taz here: The Dog.

As mentioned, he died last July.

Life takes some strange turns. About 6 weeks later, our youngest daughter's friend, who's mom works for a local vet was looking for a family to adopt another corgi. They had purchased him from a mall pet store (reputable).

Wiley. He's definitely not an alpha, so a lot more sociable around other dogs.

Fred - sorry about Magic

It's amazing what you can teach cats and dogs to do. If this is something you're interested in, check out Karen Pryor's "Don't Shoot The Dog" or, more practically, her DVD "Clicker Magic".

Pryor is a world authority on using behavioral psychology for animal training and, I think, the first person to have success training dolphins. No relation to Richard.

From recent review of children's books featuring animals.

Walked the pup in light rain this morning. No balloons but he was fascinated with the leaves floating down the gutter and with air bubbles which he discovered he could produce by putting his paw in the water. He jumped back when one of them popped.

<animal id="cruelty">
I found my roommate's green laser pointer.

It's endless fun with the cat.

You can see the wheels turning in her head when you point the laser directly at her body and she has to come up with a plan to catch this thing that is actually on her.

Yesterday she was actually trying to catch the stream of light in the air rather than the focus of the light on the carpet.
</animal>

Well, I think it's funny at least. And pets are supposed to bring their owners joy, right? Right?

My dog just chewed through the power cord to my AC adapter. Battery is getting low. See you.

old babalu, now 13 years old

had not seen the girl who had been away in college for several years, who is allergic and does not like cats, but who on occasion did some cat-sitting

girl comes by with the boyfriend

babalu comes to say hello, walks in the room, talking, then finally rubs on the the girl`s leg till the girl rubs her head

babalu paid no attention to the boyfriend
