When I'm using BBO Flash (and Firefox), the whole right border of the window flashes. It's a very thin line and does not flash when the BBO window is not on top (doesn't have focus). I generally just position the window so that the right edge is just off the screen so I don't see the flashing, but wonder if there might be a way to eliminate it altogether.

Second issue. Firefox frequently crashes when I try the private chat option. I've seen the private chat window, so it is not something that always causes Firefox to crash.

I do have a Flash blocker installed, but allow BBO.

Before I go about trying different browsers (or remove the Flash blocker), I thought I'd see if this is a problem others have had, or whether I am alone.

Firefox crashes often in BBO. Oftentimes during the weekly free tournament.
I am able to return to BBO using another browser, usually chrome, and
continue the tournament where I was before the crash.
I also have had a crash while playing with others humans,
but not usually playing solitare bridge with robots.
My firefox says it is up to date. So you are not alone
in finding Firefox is more unstable on BBO than some other browsers.

I'm not sure why some users have problems with different browsers. I suspect it's related to incompatibility with some extensions they have installed. Try disabling extensions to see if it's more stable.
