The problem with double is partner might bid diamonds, in which case you are in a world of hurt considering he could not overcall diamonds a round earlier. The problem with 3C is that you might miss your spade fit that is easily found if you pass (if your partner is in the balancing seat with diamonds and spades, he can double and then pull 3C to 3D giving himself two chances to find a landing space. Note the difference with Spades and diamonds versus Spades and clubs when competing over hearts.

So PASS is clear.

Tempting... but the problem is opener is unlimited. Your bid here runs the risk of being futile. Dbl might attract a wrong lead vs 4, so, if you do wanna bid, 3 is the technically correct bid in my opinion.

So 3 if I need action, pass otherwise.

3 if I need a zero.
X if I need stress.

Pass otherwise.

On pre-balanced auctions like this, opener is always unlimited. The theory goes if they have game and fit, your pre-balance will not hurt because they will bid or not penalize you enough. If they are minimum, you have every right to fight for the partscore. Your view that opener might be unlimited is sort of not germane.

I misread the vulnerability at first and thought we were at favorable, in which case I suppose I would stick my neck out.

Since we are at unfavorable, bidding is insane.

I'd have to say that considering bidding at unfavourable is absolute cocaine!

Hi,

I would say, the vulnerability is simply
wrong, we are red, they are green, you
could convince me to bid 3C, but only at
a different vulnerability.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: But at a different vulnerability, we would
not be in this position, because of a 3C opener,
... maybe only green vs. red.
With kind regards

Yep, I agree with everyone else, this is a pass.

On the other hand, I seem to remember bidding 3 on this hand and scoring up +150 for two overtricks. Easy game

I think it was +130  Maybe I should have alerted 3 as 5-6 in the blacks?

Vul against not is too scary. But change the vulnerability, and I think 3 is reasonable (although marginal, of course).

At IMP's I'm not too scared about being hammered. Opps are mostly careful when they might double us into a game. Having an "unlimited" opener sitting over me is a little troubling, though. It's close. Give me the T, and I'd not think twice before bidding 3. Now I'm reluctantly (cowardly?) passing. I don't expect partner to come to life here - ever.
Kind regards,
Harald
