Might be moving there in 4 months (actually Evanston, ~ 10 miles away). What should I expect? Good place to live?

:D

Great place to live. Excellent Pizza. Awesome Apple Pancakes (Walker Brothers). Lots to do. Evanston has its own pocket of cultural stuff and resturants, and its lovely near the lake. Just be prepared for the bad winters.

Do you have a job at Northwestern?

I have been offered one, waiting to hear from other places before making a decision, although I'm coming out to have a look in 3 weeks. Being by the Lake sounds fantastic, in the summer at least :D

Economics PhD :)

What is the live music scene like out there? I'm a fan of a good jazz club, classical/opera music + rock/indie stuff. Will I get lots of this in Chicago? Any chance of getting it in Evanston? How long is the journey between the two?

Like any big city, totally depends on the time you're trying to travel, and your method of travel. And time of year (weather conditions).

Train?

On that note, what time does the public transport run in Chicago? In London it all shuts downe by 01:00 which really sucks :)

Great, my friend Jonathon Weinstein is an economist at Northwestern (he is actually on the Kellogg faculty) and is a very good bridge player!

Chicago has a great music scene, but I don't know it all that well, since I am usually just visiting my grandparents when I am in chicago. I have been to a couple of good jazz clubs in Lincoln Park (20-40 minute drive, depending on traffic). There are lots of free shows in Grant Park in the summer (I have seen rock, opera, classical, etc at these).

My wife and I went to Chicago a few years ago for the U.S. Open (golf). The city blew me away. So much to do there. We used trains 100%. Not for everyone but we like to explore. Bucktown and Wicker Park neighborhoods are happening spots.

Architecture tours are very good. http://www.architecture.org/ So are nearby museums and just walking around Grant Park.

http://nytimes.com/travel has some reliable info. For starters, check out Destination Guide: Chicago then Journeys: 36 Hours | Chicago

I can only agree. I've only been visiting family for a week there, but "the windy city" is great. Public transport works fine and there is loads to do.

What I think is very nice is that the city does not go all the way into the lake but there is a strip of green inbetween (this is a great place to be).
